Assessment and Evaluation in Education
There are different methods of teaching as we can see in the world today. Peculiar systems are put in place by respective governments of countries to guide the formal learning process of nations concerned. But despite all these, one thing all these systems have in common is the need for assessment and evaluation in education.
Going to school every school day, being physically present in every lesson and activities, and even taking notes during classes, does not ascertain that one has learned anything. There is need to employ measurement assessment and evaluation in education which can show beyond any reasonable doubt what one has learned within a particular period of time.
Note that these two terms, even though they may serve the similar purpose, are not exactly the same. We’ll go into the difference between assessment and evaluation in education later on, but for now, let us take a look at their meanings.
Definition of Assessment in Education
This is one of the methods facilitators use to measure the level of education of a student. Basically, it is the application of a documented systematic approach in measuring the knowledge, belief, attitude, and skill of a student.
From time to time, teachers give out a written and oral test, conduct interviews, and monitor the behavior pattern of their students. This helps them to tell if the student is keeping up with what is being taught.
Definition of Evaluation in Education
You know how you’re expected to make your conclusions after researching on a subject? That is how teachers are expected to make conclusions after “assessing” their students. Evaluation is simply the process of judging the capacity of a student based on a series of assessments.
This is where they get to decide if there is a need to repeat a class/teaching, or if the learner in question is good enough to move on to other matters of interest within the curriculum.

There has been a lot of debate as to which if these two is more effective in school systems around the world. According to professionals, both of them are equally important so long as there is room for adjustments. For instance, if the standard is too high, it can be adjusted to suit the capabilities of the learners.
Also, the teachers need to be up and doing from their end to help the students meet the required standard. If the facilitator is not a good one, chances are, the learners will probably turn out substandard performance.
